Statement of the documentary film juryDocumentary filmmaking demands a lot from the filmmaker. It demands sincerity, braveness, creativity and a trust in your own decisions. It demands from a filmmaker that she is involved, and has her own point of view, but at the same time is able to step back and let life unfold in front of the camera. It demands a filmmaker who does not just look, but who is also able to see. We have watched 13 documentaries during the past five days, and the jury has found it very hard to chose one film that stands out in the crowd - many of the films we have watched this week could have won the award. At this festival we have seen documentaries about important themes and subjects, films that intend to educate us, to broaden our vision, to make us aware of the world around us - whether they deal with a social, historical or personal subject matter. In all of these documentaries, we want to applaud the filmmakers for having discovered and portrayed great charismatic protagonists. The filmmakers have had unique access to them and to their realities. We have enjoyed being here in Grimstad and sitting in this jury. We have seen many good films, but still we hope that next year this festival will include even more documentaries in its program. In that we mean also more money and more prizes too. Being in the jury has given us a chance to enjoy and discuss documentary films, to concentrate on form and content, instead of our daily practical and economical problems of making documentaries. Documentary filmmaking is the making of film art. It is an area where filmmakers are still able to be real auteur. Documentary films hold some of the finest possibilities of the cinema. Every documentary tells us something about its own time. It is a valuable document of the past and the present - for the future. Good documentaries are timeless. We can watch them over and over again, and they become part of our cultural memory. Documentary filmmaking is a time-consuming project. Everybody who is familiar with the making of film have discovered the three Ts: Things Take Time. It takes time to find the special moments in the documentary. It takes time to fully develop the potential that lies in the material of a documentary film. It takes time to find and make the scenes and feelings that the audience carry with them and remember long after they have left the comfortable darkness of the movie theatre. From a technical viewpoint most of the films we have seen have been doing quite well, However, the jury would like to question the filmmakers awareness of the difference between an extended reportage and a documentary film. We would have liked to see a more cinematic approach. We would have liked to see more confidence in the filmmakers own decisions and in the material you have gathered. In many cases, we believe that the full potential of the film is not fully reached. We challenge the filmmakers to be braver and leave room to the viewer's own reflection and interpretation instead of drowning it in explanations and music. The role of the documentary filmmaker is not to answer questions but to raise them. Through documentary films we discover that human beings are much more than meets the eye. We can not necessarily change the world, but we can contribute in making a difference. For the award of best documentary film we have chosen not one, but two films! This is not the sign of a compromise but is a choice we have made to emphasise the need to support and strengthen the documentary film. We also hope that the amount of money will be raised to at least match Gullstolen. Both of the films take us to a different kind of world, and describe places that we all knew existed, but that we would not necessarily like to be. The prize - DOKUMENTARFILMPRISEN - goes to: |

PRIX UIP GRIMSTAD English translation: We have chosen to give the UIP award to a film that communicates to both heart and mind; its theme comes across as being of great importance to the director, making him able to convey his subject in a credible and moving way. By trusting his story and having a natural rapport with the actors, he manages to create a convincing picture of an immigrant`s hopeless dilemma in his meeting with Norwegian society. HEDERLIG OMTALE |
